What Happens in a Binge Eating Support Group?

What Happens in a Binge Eating Support Group?

Joining a group to talk about binge eating can feel intimidating.

You might wonder:

Will I have to tell strangers everything?

What if my problem isn’t serious enough?

What if I’m uncomfortable talking?

Is this basically a diet class?

These are reasonable questions.

At Dallas Nutritional Counseling, our upcoming Binge Eating Support Group is designed to be a small, supportive environment where participants can learn, process, and connect—without judgment.

Here’s what you can expect.

It’s Intentionally Small

This isn’t a webinar with dozens of people watching a presentation.

The group is capped at 8 participants.

Keeping the group small gives participants an opportunity to get to know one another, ask questions, participate in meaningful discussion, and receive support related to what they’re actually experiencing.

Each Session Has Two Parts

Every 50-minute meeting will combine education with open process.

During the educational portion, Paige will introduce that week’s topic and provide information and practical strategies.

During the process portion, participants will have an opportunity to discuss experiences, ask questions, talk about challenges, and learn from one another.

You won’t be expected to arrive knowing exactly what to say.

And you won’t have to share everything to benefit from being there.

What Will We Talk About?

The six weeks will build on one another:

Week 1: Introduction & Goal Setting
We’ll get to know one another, establish expectations for the group, and identify individual goals.

Week 2: Understanding Different Eating Cycles
We’ll explore restriction, overeating, binge eating, and the binge-restrict cycle.

Week 3: Physical vs. Emotional Hunger Cues
We’ll look at physical hunger, emotional hunger, cravings, fullness, and the different needs that can influence eating.

Week 4: Mindful Eating
We’ll practice increasing awareness and reconnecting with hunger, fullness, and satisfaction without judgment.

Week 5: Navigating Difficult Emotions & Eating Patterns
We’ll explore practical strategies for urges, stress, difficult emotions, food-related thoughts, and challenging situations.

Week 6: Moving Forward
We’ll reflect on progress and identify tools for continuing the work after the group ends.

It’s Not a Diet or Weight-Loss Group

This is important.

The goal isn’t to give you another set of food rules.

You won’t be learning how to compensate for binges, restrict more successfully, or become “better” at dieting.

Instead, we’ll work toward understanding the patterns underneath binge eating and developing a more flexible, supportive relationship with food.

You’ll Have Support Between Sessions

Participants will receive access to a shared resource drive with educational materials, exercises, and practical resources related to the topics we’re discussing.

There will also be a private group chat to provide connection and encouragement throughout the six weeks.

Who Leads the Group?

The group is led by Paige McDaniel, MS, RD, LD, CEDS.

Paige has extensive experience supporting individuals with eating disorders and approaches binge eating from a compassionate, evidence-based perspective.

She understands that binge eating isn’t a lack of willpower and that meaningful change often involves understanding what’s happening underneath the behavior—not simply trying harder to control food.

Do I Have to Be “Sick Enough” to Join?

You don’t need to prove that you’re struggling enough to deserve support.

If your relationship with food is causing distress, taking up significant mental space, or leaving you repeatedly feeling out of control, it may be worth asking for help.

And sometimes being in a room—even a virtual one—with people who understand can make the experience feel much less isolating.
