Social Media and Body Image

Social media is a fundamental form of communication for so many of us. Especially after living through a pandemic, we can all agree that it has provided a unique way to connect with others. While there are many positive outcomes of social media, it’s also important to recognize and address the potential harms, including a negative body image. Here are a few tips to avoid the damaging effects of social media and maintain a positive body image!

1. Unfollow accounts that make you feel bad about yourself. 

It’s easy to fall into the trap of comparison on social media. In a world filled with influencers posting their bodies, workout routines, and even daily eating habits, it’s hard not to compare. But be aware that comparing yourself to unrealistic standards can be very harmful to self-confidence. Avoid this by giving yourself permission to do frequent social media cleanses. If you come across a post that brings up negative self-talk or thoughts, unfollow that account! Don’t let that influencer’s bikini picture steal the confidence you deserve to have. And remember, social media doesn’t censor out photoshop.

2. Fill your feed with accounts that bring passion and encouragement. 

After cleansing your Instagram of accounts that cause negative comparison, it’s time to refill your feed with things that make you happy. Whether it’s positive news channels (@goodnews_movement), poems (@rupikaur_), delicious dessert recipes (@brownedbutterblondie), or funny videos (@animalsdoingthings), use this opportunity to create a feed that inspires you. Following positive accounts can be a great way to spark new passions or even just bring you a smile and a few words of encouragement on a cloudy day. Not to mention the increasing number of social media accounts that promote body acceptance and self-love. While all of them might not align with your values, find the ones that bring you true fulfillment. Follow the accounts that remind you that your body is deserving of love and kindness as it is because it is! 

3. Avoid going down the rabbit hole of mindless scrolling. 

While mindless scrolling may seem like the best solution to boredom, this habit can lead to feelings of loneliness. Instead, emerge yourself in activities that invite energy such as joyful movement, reading a book, drawing, meditating, listening to or creating music, or having a conversation with a friend. Set a timer on your phone to shut off at night. Designate certain times of the day for social media. Your mental health will thank you later on for pulling yourself out of that rabbit hole scrolling! Set healthy boundaries that help you take care of yourself.
